RUSE – Knowledge Is Power

My friends wouldn’t be surprised if I rushed up to them, shook them violently and exclaimed “OMG RUSE is the best game EVAR!” I’m Alex the Producer of the Way of the Game podcast. I’ve gone on the record as saying Endwar is my second-favorite game of ALL TIME. I’ve written a series on the tactics involved in Solium Infernum. Slow, plodding, strategic warfare is my thing.

The fact that I’ve been waiting for RUSE a long time is well known. Regular listeners will know my family pre-ordered the game for me for Christmas, back when it was assumed it was going to come out in March. It’s now September, and I cheerfully purchased the game with avaricious glee from my friendly neighborhood Gamestop when the pre-order got messed up.

So be aware this review has to be taken with a grain of salt. It comes from a guy with a definite predilection for this type of game, one that requires forethought and strategy rather than simply assembling your horde quicker than your enemy and smashing their base.

Now that I’ve provided enough caveats, I can now repeat my thesis statement with wide-eyed, flailing-armed excitement. OMG RUSE is the best game EVAR.

Allow me to explain what I’ve learned in my first few hours with the game. Read more »

LurkerWithout’s Sunday Trade: Light Brigade

Light Brigade written by Peter J Tomasi, art by Peter Snejbjerg, colors by Bjarne Hansen, letters by Ken Lopez & Rob Leigh

Just your standard WW2 story where a group of U.S. infantry are recruited by the immortal Centurion Marcus Longinus to stop a fallen angel and his army of near immortal half-human offspring from igniting an archangels Wrathful Sword upon the ever-burning Cross of the Nazarene and using it to overthrow God. So you know, same old same old…

Plus its drawn by Snejbjerg who I’ve loved since way back when he was on Books of Magic. And here he gives Frank Quietly a run for the money in the ability to draw humans that have been shot to fuck and back…

But the main appeal here is the story again. Which is kind of Devil’s Brigade meets Zulu meets Demon Knight. So you know, its chock full of awesome and plenty of scenes where Nazi’s get shot…

Pearl Harbor Attack Aftermath

On December 7th, 1941, the Empire of Japan attacked the naval station at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, killing 2,402 and wounding another 1,282. This attack, along with Germany’s successive declaration of war despite any treaty obligations, swayed American public opinion away from isolationism toward direct involvement and intervention.

The event yielded 16 Medals of Honor, 51 Navy Crosses, 53 Silver Crosses, four Navy and Marine Corps Medals, one Distinguished Flying Cross, four Distinguished Service Crosses, one Distinguished Service Medal, and three Bronze Stars earned by American military personnel who distinguished themselves during the attack.

90,000 US servicemen lost their lives in the Pacific. Today is a day we remember their sacrifice.

History: Real-Life Anne Frank

In a link passed from Awawro on twitter, we get to see a You Tube video of the real-life Anne Frank.

There is the book, the movie, and the museum in Amsterdam, but to me, there’s something different about seeing the person. Why is that, do you think? You don’t hear her speak. You don’t get any greater sense of her character than what those few seconds provide. But it’s real. It’s not words on a page or a Hollywood interpretation. It’s her. She was real. And everything that happened was real. History living for the briefest of seconds.
